Taking One Marble Out (An inspirational story)
"Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy with your job. I'm sure they pay you well but it's a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It's too bad you missed your daughter's dance recital" he continued; "Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities." And that's when he began to explain his theory of a "thousandmarbles." "You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average person lives about seventy-five years. I know, some live more and some live less, but on average, folks live about seventy-five years." "Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900, which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now, stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part." "It took me until I was fifty-five years old to think about all this in any detail", he went on, "and by that time I had lived through over twenty-eight hundred Saturdays." "I got to thinking that if I lived to be seventy-five, I only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy. So I went to a toy store and bought every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit three toy stores to round up 1000 marbles I took them home and put them inside a large, clear plastic container right here in the shack next to my gear."
"Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and thrown it away. I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life. There's nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight."
"Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfast. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure that if I make it until next Saturday then I have been given a little extra time. And the one thing we can all use is a little more time."
"It was nice to meet you Tom, I hope you spend more time with your family, and I hope to meet you again here on the band. This is a 75 Year old Man, (...), clear and going (...), good morning!"
You could have heard a pin drop on the band when this fellow signed off. I guess he gave us all a lot to think about. I had planned to work on the antenna that morning, and then I was going to meet up with a few hams to work on the next club newsletter. Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. "C'm on honey, I'm taking you and the kids to breakfast." "What brought this on?" she asked with a smile. "Oh, nothing special, it's just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. And hey, can we stop at a toy store while we're out? I need to buy some marbles."

Because sometimes asking the right questions is the answer.
- How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are? 21
- Which is worse, failing or never trying? Failing
- If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do? Because we really do not understand how to live.
- When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done? Sadly, yes.
- What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world?I would like to make EVERYBODY truly happy.
- If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich? Counseling people, making music, writing.
- Are you doing what you believe in, or are you settling for what you are doing? I am doing what I need to pay the bills.
- If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently? I would be retired at 20 and make every day count.
- To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken? 20% at best.
- Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things? I am worried about doing them BOTH.
- You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire. They all start criticizing a close friend of yours, not knowing she is your friend. The criticism is distasteful and unjustified. What do you do? I would tell them that I know the person and she is a friend and they have it wrong.
- If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be? Do good.
- Would you break the law to save a loved one? Oh yeah I break the law for much less reasons !
- Have you ever seen insanity where you later saw creativity? All the time!
- What’s something you know you do differently than most people? I do lots of things differently. For example, I brush my teeth in the shower. I would sip water, keep in in my mouth to help me swallow medicine.
- How come the things that make you happy don’t make everyone happy? Because I have such weird tastes. Or the things that make me happy are not good for me... or other people.
- What one thing have you not done that you really want to do? What’s holding you back? Get a motorcyle. I know it will kill me.
- Are you holding onto something you need to let go of? Yeah. I am a packrat in more ways than one.
- If you had to move to a state or country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why? I would move to a place where I can afford to live in a comfortable house by a warm water beach.
- Do you push the elevator button more than once? Do you really believe it makes the elevator faster? No I know it does not make it faster. But I push it just the same. I like pushing.... hahaha.
- Would you rather be a worried genius or a joyful simpleton? Worried Genius. Joyous simpletons annoy me.
- Why are you, you? Because I am.
- Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend? Yes.
- Which is worse, when a good friend moves away, or losing touch with a good friend who lives right near you? A good friend moving away. It is easier to get back to getting in touch with someone close. Uggh I thought these questions were smart. I'm not so sure anymore.
- What are you most grateful for? That God has been looking out for me and giving me love and blessings even when I do not deserve it.
- Would you rather lose all of your old memories, or never be able to make new ones? I want to be able to make new memories. That way I can redo whatever I want redone.
- Is is possible to know the truth without challenging it first? Yes.
- Has your greatest fear ever come true? Yeah. Advice: Do not let the universe know your fears. It could be wicked sometimes.
- Do you remember that time 5 years ago when you were extremely upset? Does it really matter now? I don't remember... but I am sure it mattered. I do not get upset at nothing.
- What is your happiest childhood memory? What makes it so special? I think it would be that day that I took the training wheels off my bike. It felt liberating.. like the first time I caught a wave on a surfboard.
- At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive? I feel alive lots of times ;-)
- If not now, then when? A little bit later?
- If you haven’t achieved it yet, what do you have to lose? A lot of the things I want to achieve sadly requires a lot of money :-)
- Have you ever been with someone, said nothing, and walked away feeling like you just had the best conversation ever? Yes....then I walk away. jk jk.
- Why do religions that support love cause so many wars? Because religions necessarily have human members and humans are imperfect.
- Is it possible to know, without a doubt, what is good and what is evil? Yes.
- If you just won a million dollars, would you quit your job? Yes.
- Would you rather have less work to do, or more work you actually enjoy doing? More work that I enjoy.
- Do you feel like you’ve lived this day a hundred times before? At least.
- When was the last time you marched into the dark with only the soft glow of an idea you strongly believed in? Ummm. Ouch. I stubbed my toe on something.
- If you knew that everyone you know was going to die tomorrow, who would you visit today? I would be too sad and depressed to pick one.
- Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous? If my life expectancy was going to be in at least in the 80s I would.
- What is the difference between being alive and truly living? Alive is breathing. Living is doing something more than just existing.
- When is it time to stop calculating risk and rewards, and just go ahead and do what you know is right? When the calculations just take wayyyy too long I just go ahead and do it.
- If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make a mistake? Duh. Because the learning part does not come before the mistake, dumbass!
- What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you? I would get rid of all the superficiality and tell people exactly what I want.
- When was the last time you noticed the sound of your own breathing? There it is.. I just did.
- What do you love? Have any of your recent actions openly expressed this love? Yes. All I do goes toward THAT love.
- In 5 years from now, will you remember what you did yesterday? What about the day before that? Or the day before that? No. I barely remember last Wednesday. I know I need to make EVERY day count. Hard to do it when you have a full time job huh?
- Decisions are being made right now. The question is: Are you making them for yourself, or are you letting others make them for you? I always make decisions for me.

Snow
Although this was not the first time it snowed in Burbank, California (Average Elevation: 551.85 feet above sea level.) It has happened. Apparently twice. Once in January 1949 and a little bit more in January 1950.
So this is a memorable day for me. I never thought it would happen in my lifetime.

My plea
The end of February is around the corner. I, like most Filipinos, cannot help but relive 1986.
The fervor, the hope of better things. Sadly, a quarter of a century after, we are still holding our breath for true reforms.
I wonder if Noynoy Aquino feels the same way.
His mother, Cory did what the armed New People's Army could not do since 1968. Eject a tyrant and his cronies from power. Many fault her for being inutile; I personally credit her with getting the ball rolling. We, the people, should have done more to keep the momentum.
2011. Is this the democracy we hoped for? If it is, then it was much ado about nothing. We are freer, I guess. We have had elections. Were the elections free? Well, like every freedom, Filipinos have – it is relative. Free press? Well, it would appear so. But does our press freedom get to the truth? When many media-practitioners are beholden to envelop of "goodwill," and influence is peddled like cigarettes on Manila thoroughfares? When every facet of the Filipino's life is tainted by the stain of corruption?
One cannot walk a block in the Philippines and not be a witness to the stench. From the fake La Coste shirts that people wear, to the un-cemented, usually unexistent sidewalk, to the gawdy billboards that proclaim some local politico doing something (that they should be doing anyway!). Everything is touched by corruption. Freedom, you say? Freedom from what?
It is so tragic that parents have to school their offspring to do unto other before others do unto them. We justify this as a necessity for survival. We have grown so used to rationalizing corruption. We have moved the line that separated right and wrong countless of times. All in the name of convenience.
How free are we really when we have made a dent in ridding our society of the corrupt forces --in the military and their corporate allies -- that were the cause of the 1986 revolution in the first place.
In the weeks and months after the fall of the Marcos dictatorship, the oligarchs and the elite moved quicky. Their moves did not rely on masses. No rallies to organize. No crowds to mobilize. No heroics, no personal sacrifice. All they needed, they already had. MONEY. SOCIAL STATURE. Now, the vacuum has been filled. It was merely a change of last names on top. Same filthy game.
Noy, pare, my hope…no… my plea. Take legal action against ALL enemies of the people. Try all who are responsible for raping the country. Punish the criminal cronies and oligarchs. Do better than what your dad and mom aspired to do.
There should be no statute of limitation on corruption and plunder. Go back 4 decades! Make things right. Rid the country of the tumors that afflict it. Show me…show us - that democracy does work. Prove to me that February 1986 was even worth a blip in Phlippine history.
